Meet John Harvey, founder

A personal approach to an extraordinary journey.

My relationship with Africa began in the early 1980s, when I lived in West Africa. A first safari in 1983 sparked a lifelong connection with the continent, followed by my first gorilla trek in Uganda in 1997.

That depth of personal experience still shapes every journey we create at the Gorilla Safari Company today.

My connection with Africa

A connection built
over decades.

My connection to Africa spans more than four decades, beginning in the early 1980s when I lived in West Africa and experienced my first safari. Since then, my passion for the continent has taken me to more than 20 countries.

In 1997, during an extended journey through Africa, I reached Uganda and embarked on my first gorilla trek. My travels eventually led me to Tanzania, where I established and managed a PADI Dive Center for three years while exploring the remarkable landscapes and wildlife of the Selous, Ruaha and Mikumi.

Founded in the UK in 2008, our company brings this depth of firsthand experience to every itinerary we design, ensuring each journey is shaped by genuine knowledge of Africa’s destinations, lodges and logistics.

Why I do this
“There is no greater reward for me than using the passion and experience I have of Africa to create a once in a lifetime experience for our clients”

John Harvey

How we plan together

Your safari starts
with your story.

What draws you to Africa? What would make this journey special? Those questions help us shape a safari that fits you, from the first ideas to the details that bring it together.

01 · LISTEN

Understand what matters

Your interests, time, budget and preferred pace give us a starting point. You don’t need a finished itinerary to begin.

02 · CONSIDER

Talk through the choices

Rwanda or Uganda, a focused gorilla escape or a wider safari. We help you understand how the options fit into a complete journey.

03 · BRING IT TOGETHER

Give the details attention

Permits, places to stay and transfers need to work together. Thoughtful planning makes room for you to enjoy the experience.

Let’s talk about your journey

Start with what you’re imagining.

Whether you have a clear idea or a head full of questions, we would love to hear what brings you here.
